“Grove” is a word for a group of trees growing close together, and Save the Redwoods League works to protect some of the oldest and most majestic groves on the planet. Coast redwoods can grow as a tall as a 37-story building and as wide as two Volkswagen beetles. Some of the oldest old-growth groves were alive during the time of the Roman Empire!
If you’re looking for an example of an incredible redwood grove, you can’t do much better than the Grove of Titans in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Unknown to conservationists until just recently, coast redwoods of epic proportions (some are more than 300 feet tall) reach for the sky out of a complex, multi-layered rainforest. It’s like a scene from another planet—just unbelievable in scale. Thanks to a partnership between the League, California State Parks, the National Park Service, and Redwood Parks Conservancy, the first mile of a renovated Mill Creek Trail now offers safe public access to this spectacular site.
